Framework & Guides

We are delighted to share the HE Bereavement Framework and accompanying guides for universities to better understand grief and support their students and staff.

The HE Bereavement Framework

Hundreds of thousands of HE students and staff deal with grief every year, with profound impacts – from health and wellbeing, to academic performance, employment outcomes, and retention rates.

This framework lays the foundations for institutions to reflect on their existing approach to bereavement, identify gaps, and take practical steps to improving support. It shares recommendations through five key themes:

  • Policy
  • Training and education
  • Support services
  • Communication
  • Responding to a student or staff death

Watch back…

To launch the HE Bereavement Framework in November 2025, we hosted two events, which are now available via YouTube. The first was a collaboration with Good Grief, highlighting themes of the framework through real lived experiences and student voice; the second was a collaboration with VUB, talking more practically through each section of the framework.
